Board Threads Posts Last Post
No New Posts Minas Tirith

Minas Tirith is the jewel of Gondor. The White City, as it is known to most, was built in II 3320 by Anárion, brother of Isildur and second son of Elendil, High King of Arnor. It is on a hill right against the face of Mount Mindolluin, and is home to Men. The city is divided into seven one-hundred-foot high levels, each surrounded by white walls. There is an eighth wall, the lowest, which was made of black stone, the same material used in Orthanc.

Anórien (‘Sun Land’) is the region of Gondor directly controlled by Minas Tirith, bounded by the Mouths of Enrwash to the north, the River Anduin to the East, the White Mountains to the south and the Mering Stream to the West. It is one of the two main provinces of Gondor and was named for both Anor (the Sun) and Anárion, son of Elendil. Its chief city was Minas Anor, later renamed Minas Tirith, and was first ruled by Anárion. It is about the half way point between Minas Tirith and Rohan.

The tower, port and city of Dol Amroth is one of the five greatest cities in Gondor. It is the largest city in the fief of Belfalas. Dol Amroth was named for the elf Amroth, the star-crossed lover of the Elven princess, Nimrodel. Until Amroth's death in 1981 of the Third Age, the Elves of Lothlórien sailed out of the port there to the Undying Lands in their white ships. The first prince of Dol Amroth (the title was created around 2050 of the Third Age) was Galador, the son of Imrazôr of Númenór and Mithrellas the elf. It is said that the Lords of Dol Amroth are fair of face and noble of blood because of this heritage. This city is one of Gondor's most precious places.

The Plennor fields that surround the beautiful and magnificent White City are one of Minas Tirith's many defenses, forcing the enemy to battle in the open fields before even reaching the White City. There's really nothing in the Plennor fields aside from empty fields.

No New Posts Osgiliath

Osgiliath straddles the Great River Anduin at a point approximately half way between the cities of Minas Anor to the west and Minas Ithil to the east. It is one of Gondor's primary defensive outposts and if it were to be lost, it would deal tremendous blow to Gondor and its defenses. Only soldiers and rangers occupy this region.

A boat-shaped island in the Anduin just south of the Nindalf, Cair Andros (Ship of Long Foam) is named for the way the river foams as it strikes the rocks of the island's high, prow-shaped, upstream end. No New Posts Edoras

The chief city of the Horsemen of Rohan is Edoras. It was built in the twenty-sixth century by the first two kings of the Rohirrim, Eorl and Brego, at the foot of the White Mountains. The name is a translation of the Rohirric word for "the courts" as this is the royal city, and contains the great feast-hall of Meduseld, the court of the king. From the high ground of Edoras, built on a hill, the kings can look out onto the great horse plains that make up the kingdom of Rohan.

At one time the region contained a good population of the Rohirrim and many herds of horses ran on the plains, but the predations of Mordor has caused most of the population to move closer to the White Mountains.

The great fortified gorge in the White Mountains in the Westfold of Rohan is called Helm's Deep. Named after the Rohirrim king Helm Hammerhand, Helm's Deep is one of Rohan's two major places of refuge during times of war (the other being Dunharrow). Helm's Deep refers to the entire fortified system which included the gorge, the Deeping Wall built across the gorge, the fortress of Hornburg, the cavern refuge known as Aglarond (or the Glittering Caves) and the Deeping Stream that flows from the gorge. The defenses of Helm's Deep were largely built by the Men of Gondor, although the caverns of Aglarond were believed to have been delved during the Second Age by the Númenórean Sea kings.

The Kingdom of the Dwarves

Board Threads Posts Last Post
No New Posts Moria

The name used for the ancient dwarven mine of Khazad-dûm after 1980 of the Third Age. It means 'The Black Chasm', but is sometimes translated as 'The Black Pit'. Although in the Third Age the names Moria and Khazad-dûm seemed to be interchangable, the name Moria only applied to the mine after it was deserted by the Dwarves. After the Dwarves left, it became dark and evil. There are orcs, trolls and one of the balrogs. The balrog is Durin's Bane, who killed Durin and drove the dwarves out in the first place. Only the very brave...or very idiotic--or both--enter Moria now.

The name means 'lonely mountain'. Also called the Kingdom Under the Mountain. A lone mountain northeast of Mirkwood, at the source of the River Running and above Dale. Thrain I founded the kingdom in 1999 of the Third Age, after being exiled from Khazad-dûm. The dwarves built a magnificent home in the mountain, and at the heart of it they found the Arkenstone. Only Dwarves dwell in or near this mountain, hiding their massive wealth and treasures from the rest of Middle Earth.

No New Posts Iron Hills

A large range of hills to the east of Mirkwood and north of the Sea of Rhun. In the year 2590 of the Third Age, after the Cold Drakes forced the dwarves from the Grey Mountains, a group of them led by Grór, the son of Dain I, settled in the Iron Hills and made a homeland there. They were prosperous there and often sent troops to assist other dwarves. After the Battle of Five Armies, dwarves from the Iron Hills reclaimed Erebor, the Lonely Mountain and repopulated it.

No New Posts The Shire

In the Year 1601 of the Third Age King Argeleb of Arthedain gave lands east of the Baranduin (Brandywine) River to hobbits out of Bree to settle in. The Shire initially consisted of the lands between the Brandywine and the Far Downs and was divided into 4 Farthings. In 2340 the Shire was expanded in size when the Oldbucks settled Buckland, between the eastern bank of the Brandywine and the Old Forest. Hobbits prosper in the Shire and are mostly outside of the concerns of the rest of Middle-Earth - with a few notable exceptions.

No New Posts Brandywine River

From its source at Lake Evendim the Brandywine (Baranduin) River meandered south through Eriador and entered the Great Sea to the south of the Blue Mountains. In its entire length the Brandywine was only crossed at two points, at Sarn Ford in the South of The Shire, and at the Brandywine Bridge (Bridge of Strongbows) where the Old Forest Road crossed it. The River serves as the Eastern Boundary of the Shire (except for Buckland) and from the years 861 through 1974 of the Third Age the length of the river from the Old Forest Road to the Great Sea serves as the eastern boundary of Arthedain.

Mordor is the region east of the Anduin where Sauron chose to establish his stronghold beginning in the year 1000 of the Second Age. The black land of Mordor is bounded on three sides by mountains; impassable except for in two places. The Ash Mountains (Ered Lithui) mark the northern border and the Mountains of Shadow (Ephel Duath) act as the border to the west and south. No New Posts Ash Mountains

Serving as the northern boundary of Mordor, the Ash Mountains (also called the Ashen Mountains or Ered Lithui) run almost due west from their start at Morannon until they ended in the eastern land of Rhûn. Morannon is the name for the narrow gap where the Ash Mountains meet the Mountains of Shadow. It is in this gap that Sauron had the Black Gate of Mordor erected. These provide a defense from any invaders seeking to invade from the North.

Isengard, also called Angrenost (‘Iron Fortress’) in Elvish, is located at the southern end of the Misty Mountains near the start of the River Isen. The Ring of Isengard refers to the circular stonewall that forms the outer defense. Within the walls of Isengard, the Númenóreans also built Orthanc (‘Forked Height’ or ‘Mount Fang’), an indestructible stone tower. The Black Gate that closes off the main entrance to Mordor at the mouth of Cirith Gorgor, the "Haunted Pass". Cirith Gorgor is a narrow pass that separates the Ash Mountains from the Mountains of Shadow and runs between the Dagorlad and the great bowl of Udun. The gate was first built shortly after Sauron first began fortifying Mordor after the year 1000 of the Second Age. The Morannon consists of a huge rampart of stone into which was placed a single gate of Iron with arched doors built into it. The Morannon is most likely the most important defense for Sauron and his evil forces.
